My thoughts on AI

I've been thinking about this a lot lately — and I figured it was time to actually put my thoughts into words rather than just lurk in these threads.

Generative AI in writing isn't the threat people make it out to be. If anything, it's the most democratizing tool we've seen in a long time. Not everyone has the luxury of a writing background — years of practice, a good editor, an English degree. But everyone has ideas worth expressing. That gap between having something to say and being able to say it well is exactly where these tools shine.

I use AI assistance in my own writing workflow, and my work hasn't suffered — it's improved. Not because the AI writes for me, but because it helps me think more clearly. It's a sounding board, a first draft engine, a way to get past the paralysis of the blank page. The final voice is still mine. The ideas are still mine. The craft comes from knowing what to keep and what to cut.

The "authenticity" argument against AI writing always strikes me as a little hollow. Writers have always used tools — spell checkers, thesauruses, ghostwriters, editors who essentially rewrite whole manuscripts. We don't gatekeep those. The anxiety around AI feels less like a principled stance and more like discomfort with how good the tool has gotten, how fast.

What I'd push back on is the notion that using AI is somehow lazy or dishonest. That framing does a disservice to the very real skill involved in prompting well, editing critically, and knowing when the output misses the mark — which it often does. It's a collaboration, not a shortcut.

Curious whether others here have actually integrated it into their process, or if the discourse is mostly from people who haven't really used it seriously. Genuinely interested in both sides.
